It was announced today that Woody Harrelson will be appearing in the Star Wars universe, having signed on for the upcoming Han Solo prequel. And despite a prolific career playing an array of distinct characters, I have to assume he’s playing Han Solo’s mentor. I mean, he has experience, and it’s not like the guy could be the villain — even in his darkest roles, Woody Harrelson just seems so nice, you know?
And while we don’t have any other information on Harrelson’s role, what’s important here is just that he accepted a role. It continues the Star Wars franchise’s casting hot streak, following Mads Mikklesen’s role in Rogue One and Benicio del Toro’s in Episode VIII. These actors may not be blockbuster stars, but they’re highly respected, which shows that Disney is interested in bringing in a higher class of actors for Star Wars. It makes me wonder, who are some other highly respected actors we could next see in the galaxy far, far away? Here are my picks!
After delivering some of the most powerful performances of any actor in her generation in films like Bridges of Madison County and The French Lieutenant’s Woman, no one is more respected than Meryl Streep. Who else could portray that blue elephant who plays the keybopard in the Mos Eisley cantina?
There are method actors, and then there are method actors, and Daniel Day Lewis falls into the latter camp… BIG TIME. When he played Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln, Daniel wore a large hat at all times, even to bed, and asked a friend of his to shoot him in a theater, a request the friend politely declined. If Boba Fett ever takes off his helmet, it better be Daniel Day-Lewis under there.
All the women from Hidden Figures
A certain level of historical import has rubbed off on the three leads of Hidden Figures, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe. Together they could play the Rancor (one to do its voice, the other two to manipulate the large puppet).
I would love to see an actor of Kramer’s stature play a type of alien in Star Wars.
While Star Wars can certainly be a fun romp, I simply couldn’t see Harrison Ford, one of our most celebrated actors since his career bagan way back in the ’70s, playing any role in the series that wasn’t deeply imbued with decorum and import. Perhaps he could play a Galactic Senator, or a contemplative Jedi Master? I know it’s hard to imagine Harrison in Star Wars, but maybe one of those roles would do the trick!
