So much for Sunday Funday! Today United Airlines is facing major social media backlash after Shannon Watts took to Twitter to report that a United gate agent stopped two girls from boarding because they wer wearing, wait for it…LEGGINGS. A thrid girl was allowed to board after changing. Wtf? Seriously what is more comfy to wear on a flight than leggings? Also what year is it? Here’s the tweets Shannon dispatched from the scene:
1) A @united gate agent isn’t letting girls in leggings get on flight from Denver to Minneapolis because spandex is not allowed?

3) Gate agent for flt 215 at 7:55. Said she doesn’t make the rules, just follows them. I guess @united not letting women wear athletic wear?

A 10-year-old girl in gray leggings. She looked normal and appropriate. Apparently @united is policing the clothing of women and girls. https://t.co/RKsIFoE8pq

United repsonded at some point and while they seemed to be concerend intially, they quickly moved into robotic corporate lingo overdrive.
@shannonrwatts Are you speaking with this passenger, Shannon? ^NJ

They then switched gears a bit, claiming that the the girls were “pass travelers” (company employes or family memeners) and have to follow a dress code when flying.
Twitter quickly joined in the pile on, pointintg out the sexism and hypocrisy of the airline, and many said they would no longer be flying United. Even celebs were getting in on the act.
Journalist/Platinum flyer here, @United: You block girls in leggings from flights but you’re promoting yourself w/THIS tweet? @shannonrwatts pic.twitter.com/wdCB34aqT8

I have flown united before with literally no pants on. Just a top as a dress. Next time I will wear only jeans and a scarf.

@united Leggings are business attire for 10 year olds. Their business is being children.

.@united Girls who fly on company benefit policy should suppress their sexuality, real and imagined, while paying passengers get freaky!

@united @baddestmamajama I’ve worn leggings on United flights dozens of times. Very strange to enforce this rule randomly.

@united @baddestmamajama I’m a 35 y/o woman who is 8 months pregnant & exclusively wears leggings. Should I cancel my flight w/u next week?

What do you think? Is United right? Or is this just another example of women being shamed and labeled based on what they wear?
