Alcohol is intoxicating; in the literal sense and in the feeling of freedom and release of inhibitions that it gives its consumers. However it can prove an addictive substance to those who blur the lines between drinking as part of a normal social life and drinking unmanageable amounts which has a disastrous affect on your health and well-being.
As with many addictions, alcohol can be especially dangerous when it becomes a coping mechanism for other problems we have in our lives; dependency grows through negative behavioural patterns and a poor environment. Alcohol should never be used to fill a void or as a remedy for mental illness or heartache.
The term is defined by the World Health Organisation as “chronic continual drinking or periodic consumption of alcohol which is characterised by impaired control over drinking, frequent episodes of intoxication, and preoccupation with alcohol and the use of alcohol despite adverse consequences.”
One man on Reddit, though, has broken the habit, and has an inspiring story to share, after he decided that enough was enough. He decided to curb his alcohol consumption completely, leading to an inspirational improvement in his quality of life.
