Today, the United Kingdom awoke to the news of the worst terrorist attack since the July 7th bombings in 2007. At approximately 10:33pm an explosion occurred at an Ariana Grande concert in the Manchester Arena, leaving 22 people dead an 59 others seriously injured. Greater Manchester Police are currently treating the violence as an act of terror, and suspect that the explosion was the result of a lone male employing an improvised detonator in a suicide strike.
In a statement made outside 10 Downing Street, British Prime Minister Theresa May stated:
“It is now beyond doubt that the people of Manchester have fallen victim to a callous terrorist attack … We struggle to understand the warped and twisted mind that sees a room of young people as an opportunity for carnage.”
Nearly 21,000 people attended the concert, many of whom fled for their lives in the wake of the explosion, and many videos taken by panicked bystanders have documented the chaos and confusion at the time. It seems likely that bomber chose the venue in order to kill and maim as many people as possible, targeting adults and children indiscriminately.
The first victim of the attack has already been named as 18-year-old Georgina Callander, a student studying a health and social care course. Yet now an even younger victim of the attack has been identified: eight-year-old Saffie-Rose Roussos.
