There's A Surge Of Babies Being Named After Pokémon Now…

If you think Pokémon Go is just a phase we’re all going through, that it won’t actually affect the greater parts of our social lives, think again. Now babies are being named after Pokémon…

Eevee has climbed 1,377 spots on the list of popular girls’ names in the last year alone, and it’s definitely one of the cutest of Nintendo’s adorable pocket monsters to be named after. On the other hand, Onix looks like a snake made out of stones with a shark fin attached to its head, and yet the name “Onyx” still jumped up 2,184 spots on the girls’ list (confounding). In fact, the name “Onyx” essentially didn’t exist until in the ’90s, when Pokémon was introduced.

Other names like Ash, Roselia, and Ivy(saur) have also risen in popularity, but those are obviously more “traditional” names. Although you just know there’s gonna be some poor kid out there getting asked if he’s named after Pokémon’s Ash all the time when he grows up, and he’ll have to explain that Ash is just the color his mom was looking at paint samples of when she found out she was pregnant. But boy oh boy, I can’t wait for the first baby named “Aerodactyl” to be born…

Babycenter Editor in Chief Linda Murray explained why she wasn’t surprised by the surge in Pokémon-inspired names: “We see babies named after TV show characters, celebrities, and even Instagram filters. Millennials are particularly attracted to technology and ’90s nostalgia, which is one of the reasons we think Pokémon Go is already having an impact on baby naming trends among pregnant women.” Can’t argue with that! It’s the reason why Fuller House is a thing and our generation keeps trying to bring back a soda called Surge that was basically one step up from drinking antifreeze.

If you were having a baby, which Pokémon would you name it after? Let us know on Twitter @Smosh!
