The 11 Coolest Hackers from Movies and TV

Hackers — super cool in movies, super terrible when stealing your credit card info and buying $400 worth of supplies at Home Depot. Hackers are having a bit of a moment right now since Russian computer experts are making mincemeat of our secret files and Donald Trump gave them a shout-out in a press conference. But real life hackers are not cool. I dare Wikileaks to post a picture of any of the people who work there. I guarantee you, none of them look anything like Angelina Jolie or the dude from Mr. Robot. But while real life hackers are pasty-faced losers phishing for your social security number, TV and movie hackers are f*cking cool. They’re like Robin Hood – the little guy getting revenge on the big baddies by using their systems against them. They wear leather jackets and are anti-social in the cool way. Here are 11 of the dopest hackers in TV and movies.

1) Zero Cool – Hackers

Jonny Lee Miller, now mostly known for his status as the first of Angelina Jolie’s ex-husbands, really had a moment in the ‘90s. Zero Cool crashed 1507 systems on one day in 1988! Damn, dude!

2) Acid Burn – Hackers

She’s a hacker and she looks like Angelina Jolie, enough said. Every character in Hackers is cool in a way only hackers of the ‘90s — the Golden Era of Hacking – can be. It helps that she looks like a gorgeous cyber elf.

3) Raven Reyes – The 100

While Raven isn’t specifically a hacker – she seems to be the only person good with just about everything from spaceships to security systems – she did hack into the City of Light. That makes her a hacker extraordinaire. She’s a gorgeous genius who’s also watched her boyfriend die before her eyes, been tortured, lost the ability to use one of her legs, and been brainwashed and then unbrainwashed. The 100 is a real fun show, y’all.

4) Luther Stickell – the Mission Impossible Movies

Is there anyone cooler than Ving Rhames as a hacker? He wears cool outfits, hacks Russian satellites, and doesn’t ask permission. “Tell me it’s possible to do facial recognition on a sketch,” Jeremy Renner pleads. “For mere mortals, no,” Luther responds. “For me, I could have done this at home.”

5) Tank – The Matrix

Tank can hack your brain. That’s some next-level sh*t. He’s the kind of hacker the world actually needs (when the world has been overrun by evil aliens).

6) Napster — The Italian Job

His name is Napster because he originally thought of the idea for Napster in college but his roommate stole it while he was sleeping. Damn those floppy disks! So stealable.

7, 8, 9) Everyone in Sneakers

Robert Redford and Ben Kingsley’s Martin and Cosmo are definitely the most old-school hackers on this list, as Sneakers starts in 1969 as they’re breaking into computer networks to redistribute conservative money to liberal causes. They break into Nixon’s checking account and give all his money to a pro-marijuana organization – a truly worthy task. Then in the ‘90s, they team up with a super powerful blind hacker named Whistler played by David Strathairn who hacks the Federal Reserve using braille.

10) Elliot – Mr. Robot

Elliot’s weird in the cool way that a lot of us think we are, even though we’re really just awkward. He’s smarter than pretty much all of us, so he’s the new king of nerds.

11) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Lisbeth Salander (who has that titular tattoo) is a great hacker who also happens to be completely terrifying. She is the ultimate badass bitch you don’t wanna f*ck with or she will cut your d*ck off.
