Did you fork out the $9.99 to play Super Mario Run? You should. Super Mario Run is great. It’s crammed full of different game types, from Rally Mode to World Tour Mode, and has a ton of amazing alternate characters that force you to vary up your strategies. Here’s a rundown of what these all these runners can do, how you unlock them, and where they’ll be the most helpful.
Powers: Mario has just one power — he can take a mushroom that gives him an extra hit point. He’s the basic character and the one the game is designed for. Mario is neutral with room for error, and serves his role well. While he’s fun to play with, the guy can do, like, zero tricks.
In Toad Rally: Mario is best used in the “Elevated Platforms” Toad Rally levels. Due to the specific nature of those levels, using the character the game was built for is a huge help.
Powers: Toad can’t use mushrooms like Mario, but he is a lot quicker than the mustachioed plumber. In fact, Toad’s the fastest character in the game. Using him changes the timing of the stages quite a bit.
How To Unlock: You get Toad when you connect the game to a Nintendo Account, so most of us will be using Toad immediately. And that’s a big help. This guy is basically Mario with extra speed, letting you beat all those early Toad Rallies very easily.
In Toad Rally: By running quicker than any other character, Toad can collect more coins and tricks than the other guy. That means he’s best used in the Plains levels due to their simplicity. There, your speed won’t be broken up too much by having to come up with a lousy strategy.
Powers: Yoshi has a flutter jump and his feet are impervious to spike attacks.
How To Unlock: First unlock 30 Yellow Toads and 30 Red Toads in Toad Rally, then purchase the Yoshi House for your kingdom.
In Toad Rally: Honestly, Yoshi is ridiculously hard to use. His flutter jump slows him down and is hard to aim. Still, the Desert Plain levels have the most spikes, so that’s where you should probably use Yoshi.
Powers: As she did in Super Mario Bros. 2, Peach floats through the air for a short period of time.
How To Unlock: Beat the World Tour Mode. Once Mario rescues her, you can use Peach in multiple levels and Toad Rally.
In Toad Rally: Peach is the best character to use on the airships. Her floaty jump will let you make incredible, controlled transitions from bad guy to bad guy (or platform to platform), allowing you to easily ruin your opponents and unlock a bunch of Toads.
Powers: Luigi has the highest jump in Super Mario Run, making him the most useful character in the game. When it comes time to find the purple and black stars, Luigi is your greatest asset.
How To Unlock: Unlock 150 Green Toads and 150 Purple Toads and then buy the Luigi House for your kingdom.
In Toad Rally: Luigi is ideal for almost every stage (save the airships, where Peach is still the greatest). But the guy really shines in the Boo House stages — his high jump lets him move the quickest through every sparse stage.
Powers: Although she’s the hardest character to unlock, Toadette has only one power — in Toad Rally, she gets a few extra Toads. Because she’s so difficult to use, Toadette seems designed for experts who want to show off.
How To Unlock: Unlock 200 Red, Blue, and Green Toads, then buy the Toadette House for your kingdom.
In Toad Rally: Toadette isn’t the best to use in Toad Rally, as Peach or Luigi will easily outclass her, but if you’re an expert player whose character choices don’t matter, the extra Toad increase will give you an edge.
