Snapchat is planning to put ads between your stories with its new “Snapchat Partners” venture.
With Snapchat’s success (it’s used more than Twitter), this move was inevitable, but it doesn’t make it any better. Here’s how they’re going to add ads: Snapchat’s auto-advance stories (the feature that lets you quickly cycle through the snaps your friends post as part of their stories), will start putting adds in between those stories. Snapchat’s reasoning behind this is to avoid bombarding users with dozes of ads by “taking a measured, conservative approach”. They’ve also said that the quality of the ads will be a huge priority. (Psh, an ad is still an ad, Snapchat.)
Womp womp. As annoying as this is, I’m sure we’ll all get used to it the way we were forced to when YouTube started putting ads in front of practically every video. It seems like the next step Snapchat could take would be to add an ad-free subscription option like Spotify and Hulu. And they should, because ads are the worst and most of us are willing to pay a small fee to avoid them as much as possible.
What do you think of Snapchat adding more ads? Do you understand that they’re a company that is designed to make money, or are you enraged that it’s not a free public service, like the library or internet porn? Let us know @Smosh!
