If anyone gives me an excellent case for why film franchises are a good idea, I tend to give them a short, succinct answer as to why they’re a dreadful idea: Shrek. In my opinion, that franchise feels like a zombie. It’s been going on for an eternity, dragging itself from sequel to sequel, and it just wont die.
I myself remain unconvinced about the contribution of the Shrek franchise towards popular culture. There are some positive aspects of the series. For one, without Shrek, we wouldn’t have pop banger All Star by Smash Mouth; a cheesy club night is nothing without it if you ask me.
Plus the Shrek films have found a new life in internet culture, often exploited for gifs and images macros and perpetuated by the weird “Shrek is Love; Shrek is Life” meme which has given the big, green Scottish ogre even more longevity.
It’s been seven years since the last Shrek film Shrek Forever After, was released in movie theatres. Judging by the title, you’d have thought that this would be the end of the road for Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Puss In Boots. Evidently, this is not the case as the scriptwriter for Shrek 5, Michael McCullers, has spoken about the status of the next Shrek film.
