After all the death, destruction and disappointment of 2016, I was hoping for a more positive 2017. Sadly, 2017 is proving to be just another year on Earth and not the sunny, idealised vision for the year ahead which I had in December.
However, it looks like this may be the last year on Earth we have left, after it was revealed that a supermassive blackhole, with more mass than one billion suns, has been ejected from the core of its galaxy. A study suggests that the black hole was effectively served an astronomical eviction notice by the gravitational waves of its galaxy.
“We estimate that it took the equivalent energy of 100 million supernovae exploding simultaneously to jettison the black hole,” stated Stefano Bianchi of Italy’s Roma Tre University, who coauthored the study which made the finding.
