As tensions continue to escalate between the US and North Korea, Russia appears to have made a big move. The US has launched a group of ships, led by aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (shown below) ostensibly as a response to North Korea’s displays of military strength and missile tests. The Guardian also reported that two sources close to the matter confirmed that the US is considering shooting down North Korean missiles, if it comes down to it. It appears the feeling is mutual, as the North Korean state paper Rodong Sinmun reported that the regime was ready to “sink” the approaching US ships.
“Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a US nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike.”
The paper, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of the ruling Worker’s Party, also called US the aircraft carrier a “gross animal” and added that the proposed strike would be “an actual example to show our military’s force”.
In response to this increasingly antagonistic atmosphere, recent developments have caught the eye of observers who say Vladimir Putin could be preparing for the fall out that could follow a clash between the US and its ally.
