In a controversial case, Derrick Stafford has been sentenced to 55 years for shooting and killing Jeremy Mardis – an autistic six year old boy – in November 2015.
Mardis was in a car with his father Chris Few while Few was being pursued by law enforcement officers. In the stand-off that followed, Stafford – an officer with the Marksville police department – and city marshal Norris Greenhouse Jr. fired several shots at Few’s car – wounding Few and killing his son Jeremy.
Criminal charges were brought against Stafford and Greenhouse though two other officers were present at the time of the incident. However, investigators concluded that Lt. Jason Brouillette and Sgt. Kenneth Parnell did not fire any shots at the time. Of the 18 shots believed to have been fired, 14 are thought to have come from Stafford’s gun while four came from Greenhouse’s.
