Toward the end of the second act of the 1994 classic Forrest Gump, our titular character embarks on a rather strange journey. Having returned home to be with his mother on her deathbed, Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks) comes across Jenny, his childhood sweetheart. After asking her to marry him and getting turned down, Forrest decides to go for a run. This run turns into a three-and-a-half year journey across the United States, earning him nationwide recognition for the umpteenth time in the film.
The idea of running across the country for so long makes me ill with anxiety. I can’t even run up a flight of stairs without one of my kidneys failing. But for one man from Liverpool, UK, running for that time and distance was not only palatable, it was downright achievable. Rob Pope may not hail from Alabama, but he’s running all over the United States, just like Forrest Gump.
