Kristen Bell’s Duet With James Corden Was A Delightful Disaster

The exciting/terrifying thing about theatrical performances is that you can plan everything perfectly and still wind up with flubbed lines, falling set pieces or technical gaffes.

On last night’s episode of The Late Late Show, James Corden attempting to sing an aerial duet with special guest Kristen Bell — however, in the true nature of musical theatre, things didn’t quite go as planned.

The two started off their duet by talking about love and how it “lifts you up.” They then proceeded to sing a delightful (if cheesy) version of the famous Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes’ song. The pair were supposed to literally be lifted into the air by their harnesses, but it became quickly apparent that there was a serious malfunction with Corden’s harness.

Bell drifted far above Corden’s head while the host levitating a mere few feet off the stage. The pair eventually found one another in midair for a brief moment, which was cut short by the continual malfunction of their harnesses.

As a skeptical viewer, I have to question whether or not this debacle was actually a surprise. It seems much more likely that James Corden was attempting to get a laugh out of everyone by staging an elaborate and corny musical-number-gone-awry. But, I suppose it doesn’t really matter whether or not the gaffe was intentional — because the awkward hilarity was certainly entertaining enough to be worth it.

If the whole thing wasn’t staged, though, then I am seriously sympathizing with whatever unfortunate stagehand got fired over this.

What do you think?
