In a Q&A session for a 30 Seconds to Mars event (by way of Batman News), Leto said Suicide Squad was pitched to him differently, in a way that made him think the film would be, you know, a more high-minded production, one befitting an actor of his status and aesthetics. And coming off the Christopher Nolan Batman films, that isn’t an unrealistic pitch. The Dark Knight is truly a work of art.

And I am on poor Jared Leto’s side. The Academy Award-winning actor thought he was going to make a piece of thoughtful commentary on society writ-large, and ended up in a boring, sexist summer sludgebuster (that’s what I’m going to start calling blockbusters that are so slow they feel like you’re moving through sludge: “sludgebusters”). Imagine Jared Leto sitting down to watch the objectively obnoxious Batman V. Superman — a film full of grim growling and aggressive angst — and thinking “This is the movie universe I’m stuck in?” And since he’d presumably already wrapped shooting, there was nothing he could do — sweet innocent artist Jared Leto, who plays guitar like this…
