It’s Sticknic! At Archie McPhee we have a yearly staff competition to see who can make the best food on a stick. It has evolved from a simple cooking contest into a team-based event with a presentation component in addition to the delicious morsels on wooden stakes.
For the last two years we’ve been lucky enough to have food writer Nancy Leson be our judge. There were four teams this year and the themes were cryptozoology, literature, midway food and dad jokes! (What do you get when you cross a 1990s country singer with Italian food? Meatbally Ray Cyrus!)
While none of the entries disappointed, the Cryptozoology team won with their magnificent tablescape illustrating the habitats of various cryptids! Jeanie, pictured above with her winner’s trophy on a stick, got first place for her Pacific Rim Mermaid Stick. It was a collection of undersea delights (seaweed, shrimp, etc…) collected by a mermaid and put on a stick.
All the losing teams are forced to post a shaming “certificate of participation” in their departments until next year.
