Incredibly Rare 50-Year-Old African Elephant Tragically Killed By Poachers

Even in 2017, poaching is still a huge issue in parts of Africa. Many species are under threat of extinction thanks to the high profits which can be made. Rhinos, zebras and elephants are poached for their horns, skin and tusks, which are then sold in other countries.

Amongst those who are at the highest risk of poaching are “big tusker” African elephants. They are particularly attractive to poachers as their tusks are larger and contain more ivory than typical African elephants. Although measures have been taken to end poaching, over 30,000 elephants are killed every year for their ivory.

Well-known elephant Sateo II is the latest victim of poaching in South Africa. He was believed to be one of the oldest elephants in the herd, at around 50 years old. His death now means that an estimated 15 tusker elephants are left in Kenya, out of a total of 25.
