Because we should all end our weeks a little smarter than we were before, every Friday we pick a topic and tell you five facts you may not have known! Use these to impress your friends over the weekend.
We love everything about Rihanna, from her don’t give a f*ck Instagram to her flawless style to her “WTF are they?” relationship with Drake. And while you might have learned a lot about RiRi from that weird Miranda July interview, there’s still a lot you might not know about the good girl gone bad.
Rihanna is Her Middle Name
You might know her as RiRi, but her full real name isn’t Rihanna. The singer was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20th, 1988 in Barbados. But today, she’s joined the likes of Cher, Madonna, and the already existent singer Robyn who go by just one name. Because that’s all you need.
She Dropped Out of High School
Rihanna attended Combermere High School alongside future crickiters Chris Jordan and Kraigg Brathwaite. Rihanna was an army cadet in a sub-military program, and singer-songwriter Shontelle (aka Beyonce’s opening act for her I Am… tour) served as Rihanna’s drill sergeant. Rihanna ended up dropping out of high school to pursue her musical career. Hope that works out for her!
She’s Never Had Vocal Training
Believe it or not, Rihanna did not have vocal training before she was discovered by Def Jam Recordings. The mezzo-soprano took vocal lessons from Ne-Yo. She said of the experience, “I’ve never had vocal training, so when I’m in the studio, he’ll tell me how to breathe and stuff… He’ll call out these big fancy words: ‘OK, I want you to do staccato. And I’m like, ‘Okay, I don’t know what that is.'” That means there’s hope out there for everyone who loves to sing in the shower!
Madonna is Her Biggest Influence
The good girl gone bad is a fan of another bad girl, Madonna. “I think that Madonna was a great inspiration for me, especially on my earlier work,” Rihanna said of the singer. “If I had to examine her evolution through time, I think she reinvented her clothing style and music with success every single time. And at the same time remained a real force in entertainment in the whole world.” Well, both Rihanna and Madonna have the one-name thing going for them!
She’s Got Some Famous Fans
Rihanna can count celebs Katy Perry, Cara Delevingne, and Shakira as some of her famous fans. But RiRi has a more unexpected fan as well — Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, loves the singer, having said, “I’m a huge Rihanna fan, I think she has a kind of agency over her sexuality and she’s open about her sexuality, she has enormous grace and she’s immensely talented.” But when will Ensler write The RiRi Monologues?
