First there was the Ice Bucket Challenge, which was at least for a good cause. Then there was the Snow Challenge, which was just stupid. And now we have a challenge that shows kids’ exhaustion with internet challenges that force them to get VERY COLD VERY QUICKLY, because the latest #Challenge is getting kids to set themselves on fire. Literally.
The #FireChallenge hasn’t yet spread like wildfire (pun intended) the way previous hashtag challenges have, and that’s probably because the challenge goes like this — you douse yourself in rubbing alcohol, set yourself on fire, and then hope you make it into a running shower in time. Doesn’t that sound fun?! (Hint: no it doesn’t.)
But there are still a lot of people trying it, so much so that doctors in Long Island’s Nassau County needed to give an official warning against the Fire Challenge. Doctors at the Nassau University Medical Center are treating a 12-year-old boy with second and third degree burns over most of his body after attempting the challenge last week. “He underwent a very extensive reconstructive procedure last Friday,” one of his doctors explained. “He’s doing relatively well, but he was fighting for his life this weekend.”
So in conclusion, no matter how bored you are, or how much your friends pressure you, or how desperate you are to get #InstaFamous, please please PLEASE for the love of your skin and internal organs, DO NOT DO THE #FIRECHALLENGE. And don’t encourage others to do so.
TL;DR: Just… don’t light yourselves on fire, kids. Don’t do it.
