Classic Paintings + LEGO = Awesome Pop Art Portraiture
Italian artist Stefano Bolcato repaints the subjects of famous portraits as LEGO minifigs with impressively sensitive and accurate results. We aren’t quite sure how Bolcato manages to convey such subtle expressions on the simple facial features of a minifig, but he does it every time.
“[Bolcato is] known for his paintings using LEGO people; it’s a practice he started due to his childhood love of this classic toy. “LEGO were always my favorite toy as a child. The fascination is a holdover from my childhood that I brought into adulthood,” Bolcato shares. “One day I thought about how the figures could become characters, and that they would have the ideal features to take on a story and tell it effectively.”
Pictured here are Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird by Frida Kahlo, Four Marilyns by Andy Warhol, Portrait of an Unknown Woman (La Belle Ferroniere) by Leonardo da Vinci, Portrait of Dante by Sandro Botticelli, and Portrait of a Young Woman by Antonio del Pollaiolo.
