Airing for six seasons and earning two Golden Globe nominations along the way, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air is one of the most well-regarded sitcoms of the 90’s. It still has a cult following today, composed of those who grew up watching it, as well as others who have come to appreciate the show through reruns. The family sitcom ran from 1990 to 1996 on NBC and was a great ensemble comedy series, despite the slightly gimmicky premise. It also launched the eponymous Will Smith’s career, transforming him from a musician into a successful actor in Hollywood.
Created by Andy and Susan Borowitz, the show stars Will Smith playing a fictionalised version of himself, a wannabe-rapper teen from West Philadelphia (“born and raised”) who is sent by his mother to live with his upper-class aunt and uncle in their mansion after getting into a fight.
The show was noticeable for contrasting Will’s street smarts with that of his Ivy League cousin Carlton and the more upper class values of the Bel-Air family. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air also featured a number of heartwarming scenes; these emotional interactions helped to create proper character development over the course of the show’s six seasons (most notably in the episode where Will attempts to reconnect with his estranged father).
After the final episode aired in May 1996, fans have been clamouring for a Fresh Prince reunion of some sort, but Will Smith has been adamant that the show is finished for good. That hasn’t stopped the speculation or the theorising, however, and the latest image from actor Alfonso Ribeiro might just reignite fan interest in getting the program revived.
