It’s easy to forget with all the future wars, ghosts, and black ops, but Call of Duty began as a humble World War II game. Now, of course, it feels almost quaint, this idea of playing as a soldier armed not with a jetpack and laser rifle but instead a backpack full of MREs and a regular rifle. And yet, Call of Duty could be going back to that time, as an anonymous leak to Youtube channel TheFamilyVideoGamers seems to confirm that the next game in the shooter series will return to World War II. And the pictures these guys got ahold of sure seem legit. In fact, I hope to god they’re legit, because I got so sad thinking about what kind of person might take the time to fake this.
And while it would be cool to once again see a Call of Duty scenario that has the gravitas only real history can provide, are gamers going to want to take this step backward? I mean, they’ve spent the last few years wielding exo launchers and digital mines while fighting Kevin Spacey. Who wants to return to machine guns and analog mines and fighting Donald Crisp (who was quite popular at the time)?
I’ll be interested to see. But Call of Duty started slipping, sales-wise, last year, making this supposed turn to World War II a potentially make-or-break moment for the franchise. I suppose that, if they really do need to show the grit and bootstrap-ability necessary to pull themselves out of the doldrums, Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer could do worse than setting the game during this time period. Remember, World War II saw the rise of the Greatest Generation, and maybe some of that group’s strength and determination will rub off. My grandpa was a World War II vet, and he used to hunt moose by waiting up in the trees for one to walk underneath, and then dropping onto its back, grabbing it by the antlers, steering it to the cabin, and then slitting its throat outside the front door. That’s a grit and ingenuity you can’t teach.
