A man who attempted to drive a vehicle through a busy shopping centre in Antwerp had a shotgun and several other weapons in the car, it has been reported.
The car was intercepted at port docks, said the federal prosecutors office. A French citizen has been arrested and detained at the scene.
An Antwerp Police spokesperson told the Independent: “Police intercepted a car at around 11am this morning. There were no injuries and one man was arrested. The incident is under investigation.”
In light of the attack on Westminster Bridge and in the grounds of Parliament in central London yesterday, the federal prosecutors office, which typically deals with extremist threats, is taking on the case.
The Prime Minister Charles Michel praised the work of security officials, saying: “We remain vigilant. our security services have done excellent work.” We’ll have more on this story as the situation develops.
