Avada KedavrAAAAAHH: Sorting Hat-Looking Spider Named After 'Harry Potter's Godric Gryffindor

Isn’t the goal of all writers to create something so iconic it lends its name to a truly terrible monster that will assuredly kill them in the future? The objective was just completed by Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who saw a newly-discovered species of spider named after her creation Godric Gryffindor, former owner of Hogwarts’ Sorting Hat. The Eriovixia gryffindori was discovered by presumed HP nerds Javed Ahmed, Rajashree Khalap, and Sumukha J. N.

I’d go back to my abusive aunt and uncle’s hellhole of a cupboard before I’d let this f*cker sort me.

On Twitter, Rowling said she was “truly honoured” by the spider’s name, and congratulated the researchers on “discovering another #FantasticBeast”. But if I were JK Rowling, I wouldn’t be so stoked — she can never use the Sorting Hat in another one of her novels again.

Any goodwill audiences have towards this character (prop?) is tarnished by the image of it suddenly growing legs and scuttling down their shirt.

The paper’s authors say they chose the magical name “in an effort to draw attention to the fascinating, but oft overlooked world of invertebrates, and their secret lives.” So let’s give them what they want — what’s involved in the secret lives of invertebrates? Maybe some of them are liars, hiding the fact that… they were vertebrates this whole time.
