When you’re young, there aren’t many worse sensations than feeling a pang of hunger, only for your parents to be too asleep to do anything about it. When I was a kid and I had a hankering for a midnight snack, I’d usually wander over to wherever my mother was sleeping, hold open her eyelids to “wake her up”. When that invariably failed, I would slink over to the kitchen and make myself some toast, the chocolate of the Nutella tempered by the bitter taste of compromise.
Out in East Palestine, a village situated in Ohio, one eight-year-old boy was in the mood for some food, and he wasn’t about to settle for some toast or some cereal, either. While his mum and dad were fast asleep in their home, this youngster was tucking into a cheeseburger with his four-year-old sister. In order to satisfy that hunger, this eight-year-old drove himself and his younger sister a mile and a half for some McDonald’s in their father’s van.
