Part of having friends means following them on social media and liking their stuff, whether you LIKE like it or not. That means that unfollowing a pal on Instagram is pretty uncool. Of course they post too many selfies. That’s what Instagram is all about. And some of their posts will always be boring. That’s not a good enough reason either (social media is a cesspool, get used to it). But there are a few internationally recognized acceptable reasons to unfollow a friend on IG. These are their stories.
1) They post too many pictures of their food
A food pic every now and then is understandable if it’s a particularly good meal or you’re proud of something you cooked, but I really don’t want to see pics of someone’s plate of spaghetti. I can’t taste that food through the screen and now I’m just hungry and sad.
2) They’re really into Crossfit
It’s totally acceptable to unfollow someone on Instagram if they only post pictures of Crossfit. I’m sorry, I know it’s very impressive and real hard but I am not interested. I don’t want to see box jumps, abs flexing in the mirror, or any photo with barbells in it. Goodbye.
3) Too many inspirational quotes
I hate “inspirational” quotes. They’re banal and chronically uninspiring. I do not log into Instagram to see comic sans on a white background telling me to carpe diem. I can carpe diem of my own accord, thank you very much.
4) They post constantly
Girl, this ain’t Flickr. Why some people feel the need to post every picture they take is beyond me. Instagram is for curation!
5) They repost all their Snapchats
Recycling is good when it comes to glass bottles and aluminum cans, not social media. Snapchat and Instagram are separate for a reason. They have different functions!
6) They’re racist/sexist/otherwise horrible
Duh. You should unfollow them in real life, as well.
7) They unfollowed you first
All bets are off! Dump ’em! You owe those heathens nothing.
That’s it! Those are the only reasons. Have you ever unfollowed a friend on Instagram? Why? Can you sleep at night? Tweet me and tell me about it @erikaheidewald!
