I’m not sure why, but the shape of pasta affects its taste. It does! Some pasta shapes are more delicious than others! I’m not a food critic, so I can’t explain it necessarily. And I refuse to use the “mouthfeel”. I feel gross having just typed it. Here are the seven tastiest shapes of pasta. (Note that I’ll be using the Italian names because Smosh is a fancy place and we’re all very fancy people.)
This is cheating, because raviolis actually have things inside of them that add to the taste. But nobody can deny the intense tastiness of ravioli — pasta that is hiding something inside is always going to be better than pasta with no hidden treasures. Ravioli is even better fried, or as it’s called in polite company, “toasted”.
These long curls are fun and chewy, spiral-y and dense. I like the long fusilli the best. The longer the fusilli, the tastier it is. I know “length” and “curliness” aren’t usually included in taste descriptions, but they should be.
You know you like eating alphabet soup. Eating the alphabet is delicious! If your food can spell, it just tastes better. Wait, that might sound like I’m advocating cannibalism. Which I am not. I just like pasta.
They look like flowers! Officially, merletti are supposed to look like lace (“merletti” is Italian for “lace”), and fiori is the canonical flower-shaped pasta, but merletti look more like flowers to me. And everyone knows that the worst thing about real flowers is that they don’t taste like pasta. Merletti fixes nature’s mistake.
Manicotti are so huge, you can’t have one on your plate and not get excited. I’m American, so of course I believe that the bigger something is, the tastier it is. It’s like a pasta burrito.
Bowties: more fun to eat than to wear. Actually, that’s a really good motto for farfalle. It should go on the box.
This is my one concession to “standard” pasta. I know a lot of spaghetti and linguine fans are going to be upset, and I accept that, but I don’t find them to be the tastiest pasta shapes. Macaroni, however, is a treat. That slightly bent tube is in either of its traditional preparations, wither with cheese or a la beefaroni.
