7 Minor Harry Potter Characters Whose Stories We Want to See Told on Screen

Look, we for Harry Potter to become an expanded universe. We’ve already covered the corners of the Potterverse we’d like to see explored, so now we’ll focus exclusively on the characters. Just as the X-Men can spin a successful franchise off of Deadpool, a mercenary who farts, so too are there characters in the Potterverse with undoubtedly exciting tales. Here are the seven minor Harry Potter characters whose stories we want to see told.

Sirius Black

Time: Before The Events of Prisoner of Azkaban

Director: Chris Nolan

Sirius Black escaped the influence of his Voldermort-supporting family and took up with the likes of Harry Potter’s father, James. Together, he and James, along with fellow Marauders Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew, learned to take the form of animals. With his roguish charm and rebellious roots, a young Sirius Black film would be absolutely exciting.

Peter Pettigrew

Time: Before The Events of Prisoner of Azkaban

Director: Edgar Wright

As played by Timothy Spall, Peter Pettigrew, the man who framed Sirius Black for murder, comes off as goofy, craven, and vile. A comedy about the greatest coward to serve Voldermort would certainly be a relief in today’s difficult times. Seeing just how pathetic evil can be would be a bitter treat.

Moaning Myrtle and Nearly Headless Nick

Time: After the events of Deathly Hallows

Director: Guillermo Del Toro

Myrtle and Nick are two agents of mischief — one sour and delightfully cruel, the other proper and headless — who haunt the Hogwarts Castle. Seeing Guillermo Del Toro bring his gothic eye to non-wizard characters in the Potterverse would be a treat.

Professor McGonagall

Time: Before the events of Sorcerer’s Stone

Director: Ava Duvernay

We know next to nothing about Professor McGonagall’s past, besides the fact that her mother was a closeted witch who married a muggle minister and that McGonagall let the secret out when she displayed magical powers as a child. The idea of a witch hiding amongst humans in her teen years is a fantastic parallel to the lives some of us LEAD when we hide who we are from our neighbors today.

Neville Frickin’ Longbottom

Time: Any time, really

Director: Steven Spielberg

Neville Longbottom’s story is about a boy who surprised everyone who didn’t believe in him. For a while, Rowling teased a surprise — what if Longbottom was the real child fated to save the wizarding world from Voldermort? But when that possibility was shut down, Longbottom settled into a normal life of wizardry. But there’s still room for more. In a world where Stranger Things’ Barb is an idol, who wouldn’t want to see the adventures of the Potterverse’s dork-turned-hero Neville Longbottom?

Voldermort

Time: Before the events of Sorcerer’s Stone

Director: Peter Jackson

This one is a no-brainer. We’ve seen in great detail the rise of characters such as Darth Vader and Dr. Doom in a variety of genres. Seeing the past of Voldermort in one movie, separate from the flashbacks we got in Half-Blood Prince, would be illuminating. Peter Jackson’s love from the strange and overtly dramatic would serve him well here.
