I grew up with early 2000s fashion. Flare jeans, white platform sneakers, spaghetti straps, lace-up shirts, blue mascara — that was my look. So when that look went out, I thought it would be gone forever, that fashion had changed. But no. Early 2000s fashion was just dormant, lying in wait for to return. And now clothes that Paris Hilton would have worn out partying in 2002 are all over the runways and Instagram accounts of young fashionable people. But there are a few trends that haven’t come back… yet. Keep an eye out, though. It may be time for us all to embrace trashy chic once again.
1) Dress over pants
This was just horrible — dresses and pants are great on their own! I am proud to say I never, ever wore a dress over pants, even in my darkest 7th grade days. This trend has so far stayed in 2003, but it could come back at any time. Stay vigilant.
2) Velour tracksuits
Juicy Couture tracksuits have yet to re-take over the streets of Hollywood, but it could happen. You know Kim Kardashian still has 30 in her closet and she’s ready at any moment to break them back out.
3) Chunky highlights
Early 2000s highlights were all about being obvious. You didn’t want to look like a natural blonde or that the sun had lightened your hair — you wanted to look like you put big stripes of mustard in your brown hair. Will these globs of yellow come back? I kinda hope so, and not because I want them again (yes, 8th grade me had some pretty serious highlights). I just want to laugh at people. I’m evil.
4) Extreme low rise pants
I’ve started to see some low rise jeans back in stores and I am not thrilled. It remains to be seen if the ultra low rise will come back. You know, the jeans that barely covered your pubes? The jeans that can give a skeleton love handles? Sigh.
5) A thong sticking out of jeans (the whale tail)
This was the next level of the low rise jean trend. There came a time where it was not only acceptable for your thong to peek out of your pants, but was actively encouraged. It was ugly as f*ck.
6) Short sleeve shirt over long sleeve shirt
I did this all the time and I think it looked cute. My favorite look was a teal long-sleeve shirt underneath a blue polo. I looked so good.
7) Trucker hats
I remember trucker hats being big in the 2000s (thanks a lot, Ashton Kutcher) and it was horrible. Unfortunately, we probably can’t avoid their resurgence. It’s coming. Check back in in six months.
Would you wear any of these styles? Are you CURRENTLY wearing any of these styles? If so, definitely tweet me a pic @erikaheidewald!
