5 Video Game Glitches That Ended Up Being Helpful

It’s an embarrassment of riches in the video game world, with Game of the Year contenders around every corner. But who has time to beat them all? We got things to DO around here. And sometimes, these games come with shortcuts of their very own, accidentally built in, much to the chagrin of the game’s developers. But chagrin be damned — here are five weirdly helpful glitches in video games!

Sonic’s Unlimited Jump

2006’s hilariously glitchy Sonic the Hedgehog was rushed to market way, WAY too soon, resulting in glitchy gems like this one. Use the Purple Gem and become tiny. Become tiny and, well, jump your little heart out. Tiny Sonic has unlimited jump capabilities, allowing him to scale giant buildings in a bizarre simulacrum of my worst nightmares.

Super Mario’s Warp Zone Glitch

Legendary as far as glitches go, hopping through this invisible block in World 1-2 allows you to skip all the way to the end of the level. More importantly, check out Mario’s bad-ass moonwalking in the video above! This dude KNOWS he’s a G, and his G-ness is all in that poker face. I see you, Mario. Respect.

Pokemon Red’s Missingno Glitch

Don’t even act like you don’t know this one. Fly over to Cinnabar Island in Game Boy’s Pokémon Red and you can catch your very own Missingno. Much like Mortal Kombat’s Ermac (or Error Macro), the legend stemming from some weird programmer gibberish has become a legend unto itself, and in a reverse psychology sort of way, nothing could possibly more appealing than catching something with “Missing” in the name. But does it really exist? Do ANY of us? How much Nietzschean philosophy can we glean from Pokémon?

Mario Kart DS’s Snaking

By manipulating the drifting in Mario Kart DS, you can be just like this fellow and become a blur to every single one of the jelly haters on the track with you. “I live my life one lap at a time. Also, f*ck blue shells.”

Driver 2 – IT’S RAINING CARS, HALLELUJAH, IT’S RAINING CARS

Okay, your mileage may vary depending on your definition of the term “helpful”, but it ain’t hurtin’ nothin’, and it’s pretty amazing to see, so just bear with me here. Head up to the top of that drawbridge and hop out of your car. You’ll pass right through the less-than-solid bridge, along with any other cars on it. You may not be any closer to beating the game, but hey, it looks like a weird apocalypse designed for car lovers, and that counts for something, right?

Do you shamelessly coast by on programming bugs? Let me know on Twitter!
