11 Video Games That Just Had TERRIBLE Voice Acting

Hey man, bad acting happens; nobody’s perfect. You just gotta hope your bad work isn’t, say, caught on camera. If it is, though, you better hope it doesn’t fundamentally ruin the thing you’re working on. These games, though? Their bad voice acting almost brought them down. Some managed to survive on their own merits, while others… well, let’s just say that the bad voice acting is what they’re known for.

Last Alert (TurboGrafx CD/1989)

As someone who never even saw a TurboGrafx when he was growing up, I was astounded later in my life to learn that video games had full voice acting, all the way back in 1989. Anyway, all of the voices in Last Alert sounds like they were read by the same guy, and also that he was being held at gun point, so maybe it’s for the best I was unaware of voice acting in the late ’80s.

Vallis 3 (TurboGrafx CD/1990)

I think the lesson from these TurboGrafx imports are that Japanese game companies weren’t super interested in dialogue localizations.

Those CD-i Zelda Games (CD-I/1993 & 1994

Let Link: The Faces of Evil, Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Zelda’s Adventure, all three of which appeared not on a Nintendo console but on Phillips’ CD-i in the mid-’90s, be a warning to you about keeping your word. They only exist because Nintendo backed out on a deal to let Philips develop a CD console add-on for the SNES, and had to give Philips something in return.

Resident Evil (PS1/1995)

And now we’re in the modern era of voice acting in video games, and boy, it sure started off grim. I contend that every single voice actor in Resident Evil did not get the chance to see their lines before they read them. PROVE THEY DID!

Mega Man 8 (PS1/1996)

Look, if you have a speech impediment, all power to you. But Dr. Light’s problem with l’s here makes it hard to tell when he’s talking about the game’s main antagonist, Dr Wily. Not the best choice.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1/1997)

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is maybe one of my favorite games ever, which really says a lot about its gameplay, since ALL of the dialogue is truly unlistenable.

Clock Tower (PS1/1996)

This game is supposed to be VERY scary, but guess what? It’s hard to be scared when you’ve got line readings like this coming at you.

House of the Dead 2 (ARCADE/1998)

Look, there are tons of arcade games with bad voice acting, and do you know why? No one is pumping quarters into an arcade console because they want a real immersive yarn.

WinBack (N64/1999)

WinBack actually had one big innovation, and that was its cover system during shootouts. Tons of games built off of it, and improved it, and that is absolutely not something you can say about its horrible voice acting.

Dynasty Warriors 3 (PS2/2001)

It’s too bad I decided to do this by year, because Dynasty Warriors 3‘s voice acting is so bad it genuinely deserves to be last on the list. Hopefully we have something also truly awful to close this thing out with…

Michigan: Report From Hell (PS2/2004)

Oh boy, literally everything about this game screams “not a AAA title”, and the voice acting is just the icing on the cake. Did anyone actually play this game? It was on PS2?! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!?!

Honestly, I have no idea how such bad voice acting was still going on past… 1996?! Like, we knew better. We knew. Better.
