For some reason, the concept of gender-neutral bathrooms is a particularly divisive subject in modern society. Certain groups seem convinced that restrooms that do not enforce any sort of gender binary are inherently problematic — when, in actuality, they can actually provide a sense of belonging for individuals who just want to use a bathroom without feeling judged.

A recent bathroom selfie taken by a group of college students illustrates just how positive gender-neutral bathrooms can be, and is already being hailed as “so pure” by the rest of the internet.

Julissa Emile is a 19-year-old student at Wheelock College in Boston.

Recently, she attended a slam poetry competition in Chicago with her school’s slam poetry team, and took some time in between events to take some selfies in one of the gender-neutral bathrooms.

Every time that Emile took a photo, more people jumped into the picture …

… until Emile was proudly taking a photo of an entire group of her queer peeps. (And yes, according to Emile, all of the students in the photo do identify as queer.)

“I was just taking selfies in this amazing bathroom and then my friend Madaline joined me, and then Ellie and Lucas and Jeffry came in,” Emile tells BuzzFeed.

The tweets of the photos quickly went viral, garnering over 20,000 retweets and 50,000 likes.

Everyone on Twitter was absolutely kvelling over the cuteness and inclusiveness.

People were also quite taken with the immense amount of stylishness happening in the photo.

Emile tells BuzzFeed that she firmly believes that her selfies illustrate the importance and inclusiveness of gender-neutral restrooms.

“Personally, I think gender-neutral bathrooms are a necessity,” she says. “Everyone deserves the right to exist in a public space.”

Emile also admitted that some of the responses to the tweet weren’t positive, but that she still doesn’t understand why this is such a divisive issue.

“So many people said so many homophobic, transphobic, and racist things to us,” she added. “Why? People literally have gender-neutral bathrooms in their own homes. What’s the big deal?”

Frankly, I have no idea what the big deal is — because this is one of the best bathroom selfies of all time. And you know what? It didn’t hurt anybody. So everyone just needs to calm the fuck down and let queer people live their damn lives.
