If you cast your mind back all the way back into the past, to the distant year of 2016, you may remember that Samsung spent a colossal amount of time dealing with one of the worst public relations disasters in its history. An issue with the battery pack on its Note 7 model of smartphone made the devices extremely prone to overheating, and in some cases, they spontaneously combusted right inside the users’ pockets. It was literally an explosive screw-up on the tech giant’s part.
For safety reasons, every single phone had to be recalled, resulting in a massive loss of revenue and more than a few red-faced executives left looking very sheepish in the Samsung PR office. In a press statement issued at the time, Samsung claimed: “There was a tiny problem in the manufacturing process, so it was very difficult to figure out. It will cost us so much it makes my heart ache. Nevertheless, the reason we made this decision is because what is most important is customer safety.”
Yeah: tell that to all the people who’ve been left with scorch marks on the seat of their pants and third degree burns. But that was then, this is now, and currently Samsung are putting their chargrilled past behind them with a brand-spanking new model. The Galaxy S8 has just been released, and everyone at Samsung anxious to ensure that the new phone design won’t blow up in their faces … literally.
However, have you ever stopped to consider what happened to the hundreds of thousands of Samsung Note 7 handsets what were recalled? It turns out that they’re being put to work inside the Samsung factory. It’s a twist of fate so perfect that I couldn’t possibly have written it better myself.
