There’s nothing like a celebrity cameo at an opportune moment to really boost the ratings of an already-popular TV show – whether it’s a big-budget HBO drama or a soap opera as trashy as Days Of Our Lives, the special guest appearance is always guaranteed to draw in a few extra viewers… even if the in-universe justification is flimsy and the celebrity in question incongruous.
Over the years we’ve had a number of bizarre celebrity appearances in a number of hit series. Remember when Paris Hilton appeared in that episode of Supernatural? Or when Brad Pitt appeared on Friends? And who can even keep track of the number of famous names who have lent their voices to an episode of The Simpsons?
HBO’s mind-bogglingly successful Game Of Thrones, now in it’s seventh season, is hardly the kind of show you would expect to need a ratings boost from a celebrity – not when it’s a critical darling, boasts ratings in excess of 25 million people worldwide as of it’s sixth season, and has already featured a number of celebrity guest stars, including Diana Rigg, and Max von Sydow.
But now we’re about to see a celebrity that literally no-one was expecting having a role on the show in the next season. English boy next door singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has just announced that he will be making an appearance on Westeros as a “surprise” for Masie Williams. Man; didn’t see that one coming, did you?
