This is an image of a little girl that millions of people have seen, even though only a handful ever met her – an innocent, green-eyed three-year-old frozen in time, never ageing. The reason we have no other photographs of her is because there are no others to choose from. Madeleine McCann has now been missing for 10 years.
On the evening of the 3rd May, 2007, the toddler was apparently snatched from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, a resort in the Algarve region of Portugal, while parents Kate and Jerry McCann ate dinner. This kidnapping began the long search which one newspaper has since ignominiously dubbed “the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history.” Now Madeleine McCann is arguably the most famous victim of kidnapping since the Lindbergh baby, and is still no nearer to being found.
Since the abduction, a variety of explanations for the child’s disappearance have been provided by investigators, and recently British Prime Minister Theresa May has pledged more than £85,000 to keep the case open.
Some believe that Madeleine was kidnapped by human traffickers, according to security footage showing a child being led away to the beach by a man. The McCanns themselves have been subjected to intense scrutiny and allegations of involvement in their daughter’s death, and harsh harassment from the press in the years following the incident.
Despite the best efforts of British and Portuguese police, the case remains unsolved. Yet now, a certain Portuguese crime expert has claimed that, having assembled all the available evidence and regarded it thoroughly, he knows the fate of Madeleine McCann.
